SKM Eyes RM50 Billion Contribution To GDP By 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) — Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) expects the contribution from cooperatives to the country’s gross domestic product to increase to RM50 billion by 2020 from RM32 billion currently.

Business Development Director, Saiful Bahri Omar, said the contribution would come from intelectual property (IP) registration, including trademarks and potential geographical indicators among cooperatives in Malaysia.

He said that geographical indicator products were community-based products such as Bentong ginger, Sarawak pepper and Perak’s Sungai Gedung grapefruit.

There are over 10,000 cooperatives nationwide with seven million members.

“SKM wants to make sure that every cooperative member registers their products for legal protection,” he said during an IP awareness seminar here.

Intellectual Property Corporation Director-General, Datuk Azizan Mohamad Sidin, said most products such as communication tools, transportation, furniture, reading materials and technology can be registered under IP.

“IP registration is essential in generating wealth to its owner by creating new opportunities to increase income,” he said.
